Explore Chettinad Architecture: Well known for its architectural splendour, the Chettinad region sees 18th century mansions with wide courtyards and spacious rooms that are embellished with marble and teak. The materials used were imported from east Asian countries and Europe about 100 years ago. Around 11,000 of Chettinad’s mansions still stand, which is about half the number that existed a century ago. Architectural buffs are sure to enjoy a walk through the town to explore some of these palatial, turn-of-the-century homes that remain.
Temples of Chettinad: Originally built by the Chola Dynasty, each of the 73 villages of Chettinad have traditional chola-style architecture and reflects the spiritual beliefs of the locals. With intricate stone carvings and towering gopurams, the timeless temples have their own tanks called an ‘Oorani’. The water lilies grown in the ‘ooranis’ are used for holy rituals. Even today, the temples form a central part of the community and most of the village activities are centred around the temple. Wander through town and experience its heritage and history in full glory.
Culinary Experience: Bestowed by fresh ground spices, the renowned Chettinad cuisine is one not to be missed. Known for its unabashed heat, bold flavours and divine aroma, the cuisine is predominantly non-vegetarian with several delectable vegetarian dishes as well. Treat your palate and stomach to mouthwatering food at the hotel and learn to cook a few Chettinad dishes with a cooking lesson from the Aachi (elderly lady) from the village.
Athangudy Tile Makers: The famous handmade Aathangudy tiles are crafted in a village called Aathangudy, located about 10 km from Visalam. The hotel can organise a tour to one of the hundred small-scale tile factories to see how the original mode of production still continues to date, maintaining its legacy, authenticity and splendour.

From a bustling farmers’ market and textile workshops, to glimpses of history, peek into the timeless and cultural local life of Chettinad. The warm and friendly locals are always happy to chat, making it an even more memorable experience.
