Temples of Thanjavur: Considered to be the epicentre of the Chola dynasty and a hub of South India’s indigenous arts, crafts and architecture, the historic town of Thanjavur is located about 1 hour away from the resort. Home to the Great Living Chola temples, visitors should definitely explore these UNESCO World Heritage Monuments built by the Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola I. These grand architectural structures were built using over 130,000 tons of granite. The most popular of them is the Brihadeshwara Temple or the ‘Big Temple’ as it is commonly known, attracting tourists from all over.
Lost Wax Casting: Witness master craftsmen use the ‘Lost Wax’ technique, which is a combination of wax and soft clay from the river bed, to make moulds for ornate bronze sculptures. A technique that was later popularised across the world is believed to have been brought into the area by RajaRaja Chola during the construction of the 'Periya Kovil’. The ancient town of Swami Malai in Thanjavur is home to this group of artisans called the “Sthapathis”. Visitors to the area should definitely visit the workshops to watch these craftsmen at work.
A Scenic Bullock Cart Ride: Explore the rural countryside with a scenic bullock cart ride through the charming, narrow lanes of the neighbouring villages. Catch a glimpse of village life as you ride by, waving at the excited children and watching people go on with their daily chores. Surrounded by acres of paddy fields, enjoy a cultural experience like no other.
The Weaving of Pattu Silk: A stroll through the narrow lanes of Kumbakonam will lead you to the local silk weaver’s house where one can witness master craftsmen at work as they weave Pattu Silk using ancient weaving techniques. Watch as they weave intricate designs into silk saris with fine strands of gold. The motif-laden designs are inspired by the temple carvings in the area, as well as the nature that surrounds it – the leaves, birds and animals. This entire process of hand-assembled wooden machines carefully weaving silk is a mesmerising experience.
