Overview
The Property: The erstwhile boatyard was restored and converted to what is now the Brunt Boatyard. Steeped in stories of Fort Kochi's colonial past, the boutique hotel is moored on a historic stretch on the Malabar Coast. Immerse yourself in the salty sea breeze and serene, laid-back ambience for a relaxed holiday.
What’s Special: From the famous Railway Mutton Curry by the Anglo Indians to the Jewish pioneered Chuttulli Meen, Brunton Boatyard is a melting pot of cooking styles and cuisines from cultures that have made the Malabar coast their home over the past three decades. Most of the 26 rooms at this heritage hotel offer views that overlook the Arabian Sea, while others face the harbour and the town of Fort Kochi. The architecture and interiors reflect the town’s colonial past with high wooden ceilings, vintage portraits on the walls, wood-carved punkahs and teakwood furniture. Take a dip in the inviting swimming pool after a day of exploring, sweat it out at the well-equipped fitness centre or experience a range of relaxing massages at the Ayurvedic spa. For those absolutely unavoidable work emails, the hotel has a business centre.
The Location: Located in the picturesque colonial town of Fort Kochi, Brunton Boatyard is close to many of the town’s popular sights and attractions. Guests can spend their days wandering the narrow and colourful by-lanes or catch a beautiful sunset from a boat around the Cochin harbour.

The Brunton Boatyard’s boat departs from their private jetty and meanders around the Cochin Harbour. Enjoy spectacular views, the salty sea breeze and for a lucky few, gambolling dolphins.
Chinese Fishing nets: One of the most famous sights at Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets or 'Cheenavala', have drawn visitors to the area for years. Their size and grand construction are mesmerising and are most photogenic during sunset. The best place to view these beautiful structures is from Vasco da Gama Square. The fishing nets are believed to have been introduced to the Kochi shores by a Chinese explorer, Zheng He, as early as 1350 AD. These fixed land installations have now become a staple method of fishing in this part of the country and form part of the city’s heritage.
Dutch Palace: Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, was built by the Portuguese in 1555 and presented to the Raja of Kochi. With its medieval charm, the palace is a fine example of traditional Kerala Nalukettu style of architecture with a central courtyard along with a few elements indicative of European influence. It features murals depicting Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi since 1864.
Jewish Synagogue and Jew Town: The Jewish Synagogue or the Paradesi Synagogue was built by the Cochin Jewish community in 1568. It stands adjacent to the Dutch Palace in Jew Town that once resided a large Jewish population, a reflection of this can still be seen in a few store names and signage. Stroll down the narrow lanes of Jew Town that are lined with old Jewish homes. Stop by the curio and antique shops in the area to find interesting mementos to take back.
Kerala Kathakali Centre: If you want to add some cultural elements to your trip, visit the Kerala Kathakali Centre to watch a performance of Kathakali, a traditional dance form from the 17th century. Located on KB Jacob street, about 3 minutes from the hotel, this traditional arts centre showcases Kathakali dance performances, Kalaripayattu as well as other forms of classical dance and music.
